LAGOS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian air force on Thursday confirmed that one of its Alpha-Jets has lost contact with radar in the restive northeast state of Borno, while on an interdiction mission in support of ground troops.

Edward Gabkwet, a spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), who made this known in a statement, said the jet's loss of radar contact occurred at about 5:08 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

He said details of the whereabouts of the aircraft or likely cause of contact loss were still sketchy but would be relayed to the public as soon as they became clear.

The mission, he said, is part of the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the restive northeast.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, he added. Enditem
