KINSHASA, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the first global fund for education in emergencies, announced on Friday a 2-million-U.S. dollar emergency education grant in response to the humanitarian crisis in the border region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with the Central African Republic (CAR).

The allocation aims to ensure access to quality education for crisis-affected children and adolescents impacted by forced displacements in the region, ECW Director Yasmine Sherif told Xinhua.

According to local authorities, over 90,000 refugees from CAR have arrived the region since December 2020, and thousands more are expected due to insecurity and violence in CAR.

"We commend ECW for their commitment to providing targeted investments to support the response to the CAR crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including strengthening the national education system for the inclusion of refugee learners in a way which also benefits host community children and youth," said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

The investment will be delivered by the UN Refugee Agency in partnership with the government of DRC and with local organizations such as the African Initiatives for Relief and Development. Enditem
