NAIROBI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Wednesday launched an initiative to fast track the process of regularization of the status of Kenyans who hold dual citizenship and had renounced or lost their Kenyan citizenship under the old constitution.

Fred Matiang'i, cabinet secretary, Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government told journalists in Nairobi that the 2010 constitution now allows dual citizenship.

Matiang'i said more than 25,000 Kenyans who lost their birth citizenship by becoming citizens of other nations will have regained their old status by the end of the two-month drive.

The ministry also plans to give 500 permanent residency and citizenships to foreign investors already in the country in the next two months.

Matiang'i noted that the government intends to make amendments to the law in order to simplify the process of acquiring Kenyan citizenship.

The Kenyan official noted that through the initiative Kenya hopes to increase the amount of annual remittances received from abroad. Enditem
