Dead dugongs found at Thai beaches

BANGKOK, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Thai television networks on Monday showed images of two dugongs found dead along the coast of Krabi and Trang provinces in southern Thailand.

The report indicated that the two dugongs died on Sunday.

Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong, the director of Phuket Marine Biological Centre said that in four months, five dugongs have been found dead in different southern provinces of Thailand.

TV images showed a dead dugong being pulled out of the sea near Phi Phi Island. It also showed another dugong found dead and washed ashore at Samran beach in Trang province.

Woraphot Lomlin, the head of Hat Noppharat Thara National Park-Phi Phi Archipelago in Krabi said the dugong in Krabi was measured at 2.3 meters long and weighs about 400 kg.

Woraphot said the dead dugong has been taken to a university in Trang for an autopsy.
