DHAKA, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh has extended the ongoing shutdown of the public transport to April 11 to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Bangladeshi Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, who is also the general secretary of the ruling Awami League party, made the announcement in a video message from his office in Dhaka on Saturday.

To combat COVID-19, Bangladesh had earlier declared a 10-day public transport shutdown effective from March 26 to April 4.

The minister said vehicles carrying medicines, fuel and food items will not come under the purview.

No passenger can travel by goods-carrying vehicles, the minister added.

Bangladesh's COVID-19 death toll rose to eight as the country reported two more fatalities Saturday.

With nine more new cases reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of the cases increased to 70 in the country.
