India's COVID-19 tally rises to 6,757,131, Indonesia reports 4,538 new cases

HONG KONG, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 pandemic continued to spread in Asia-Pacific countries as the tally in India rose to 6,757,131 on Wednesday while Indonesia reported 4,538 new cases.

India's COVID-19 tally reached 6,757,131 and death toll 104,555 as 72,049 new cases were detected and 986 patients died during the past 24 hours, said the latest data released by the federal health ministry.

Currently there are 907,883 active COVID-19 cases in the country, while 5,744,693 people have been successfully cured and discharged from hospitals.

The numbers of new cases and deaths per day fell for six consecutive days till Tuesday, while the figures rose once again on Wednesday.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia increased by 4,538 in the past 24 hours to reach 315,714 in total, with the death toll adding by 98 to 11,472, the Health Ministry said.

According to the ministry, 3,854 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recoveries to 240,291.

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 329,637 after the Health Ministry reported 2,825 new cases.

The ministry said the number of recoveries rose to 273,723 after 437 more patients recovered from the coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, the death toll rose to 5,925 with 60 deaths newly reported.

Malaysia reported 489 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said, bringing the national total to 13,993.

Another 74 patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total cured and discharged to 10,501, or 75 percent of all cases.

Of the remaining 3,351 active cases, 40 are being held in intensive care and 13 of those are in need of assisted breathing.

South Korea reported 114 more cases of the COVID-19 as of midnight Wednesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 24,353.

The daily caseload rose above 100 in seven days due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province.

Three more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 425. The total fatality rate stood at 1.75 percent.

Afghanistan reported 62 new COVID-19 cases within the past 24 hours, bringing the tally to 39,548, the country's Ministry of Public Health confirmed.

Two COVID-19 patients succumbed to the virus, taking the number of people who lost their lives to 1,469 since the outbreak of the pandemic in February.

The number of people recovered stood at 33,045 after 68 patients recovered during the period.

Australia recorded 10 new confirmed cases of the COVID-19 pandemic and two more deaths, bringing its total tally to 27,182 with 897 deaths, showed the latest data from the federal health ministry.

The two more deaths were reported in the state of Victoria, which is the hardest hit by COVID-19 in the country. It newly confirmed 6 new infections.

Official data also showed that there are 58 active cases relating to aged care facilities and 26 active cases among healthcare workers in the state.

New Zealand reported three new imported cases of COVID-19, with all the community cases eliminated as the country's largest city Auckland returns to Alert Level 1, the lowest epidemic level, at midnight Wednesday.

The country's total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases reported to the World Health Organization is 1,505.

New Zealand's total number of active cases is now 37 -- all imported cases, with no remaining active community case. Enditem
