Abducted passengers, driver in western Afghanistan rescued

HERAT, Afghanistan, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Police have secured the safe release of passengers and their driver abducted in Afghanistan's western province of Herat on Saturday, police official Basir Rasouli said.

According to the official, 15 passengers including 10 men, four women and a child, and the driver who had been kidnapped early in the morning were released in good health.

The official, however, didn't provide more details.

Earlier, Lal Mohammad Omarzai, the governor of Rubat-e-Sangi district, told Xinhua that armed militants abducted a "passenger bus with dozens on board" at 07:00 a.m. local time along Torghundi-Herat city highway and took them to an unknown location.

Omarzai also blamed the Taliban militants for the abduction of passengers.

No group including the Taliban outfit has claimed responsibility. Enditem
