6.4 magnitude quake hits W. Indonesia, no tsunami alert issued

JAKARTA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 jolted North Sumatra province in western Indonesia early Tuesday, but there was no potential for a tsunami, the meteorology and geophysics agency said here.

The quake struck at 6:58 a.m. local time with the epicenter at 142 km southwest of Nias island and the shallow at 10 km under the sea bed.

The intensity of the quake was felt at II to III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in Nias Barat district, II MMI in Aek Godang of Padang Lawas district, Gunungsitoli town of the island, Padang Sidempuan town and Pakpak Bharat district.

The jolts were also felt in the nearby province of Aceh. The tremors were felt at II MMI in Aceh Singkil district. Enditem
