PHNOM PENH, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Friday logged 599 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the national case tally to 28,237, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement.

The new infections included 574 local cases and 25 imported cases, the MoH said.

The kingdom also recorded two new fatalities, taking the overall death toll to 196, the statement said, adding that another 502 patients recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 20,900.

The Southeast Asian nation began an anti-COVID-19 inoculation drive on Feb 10.

The MoH's secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine said as of Thursday, more than 2.4 million out of the 10-million target population have been vaccinated.

"Vaccine will save lives. It creates antibodies to fight back against the COVID-19 virus when the virus attacks our bodies," she told Xinhua on Friday. "The vaccine helps prevent serious illness and reduce hospitalizations and fatalities."

Meanwhile, Vandine urged people to continue complying with health measures including wearing face masks, washing hands regularly with alcohol or soap, and maintaining a physical distance of 1.5 meters from each other. Enditem
