ISLAMABAD, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Three people died of dengue fever in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province on Tuesday, local reports said.

A total of 44 cases have been reported in the province so far this year as compared to nine cases of the disease from January to May of last year, Geo News quoted unidentified health authorities as having said.

Last week, Yasmin Rashid, the provincial health minister of Punjab, said that dengue surveillance was being implemented strictly in the province, adding that the districts which were not reporting dengue cases had also been asked to do so.

In order to ensure dengue prevention activities, targeted operations including eliminating mosquito larvae would be conducted in the province, she added.

Local media reports also quoted health officials as saying that hospitals across the province have been directed to develop intensive care units and hire a large number of health workers on a contract basis to tackle the possible rising cases of dengue fever. Enditem
