Bangladesh's COVID-19 cases reach daily high of 16,230, deaths surpass 20,000

DHAKA, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The number of new COVID-19 infections in Bangladesh rose by 16,230 on Wednesday, the highest daily increase since March 8 last year, bringing the tally to 1,210,982, said the country's Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The official data showed 237 more new deaths were recorded, raising the death toll to 20,016.

A total of 53,877 samples were tested in the last 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time Wednesday across the country.

The total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 1,035,884, including 13,470 new recoveries on Wednesday, said the DGHS.

According to the official data, the fatality rate in Bangladesh is now 1.65 percent and the current recovery rate fell to 85.54 percent.

The confirmed cases have been rising in Bangladesh since last month.

To curb the virus transmission, Bangladesh on July 23 re-entered a two-week strict COVID-19 lockdown and army personnel have been deployed to patrol alongside civilian forces to maintain law and order. Enditem
