India's COVID-19 tally tops 32 mln, Indonesia reports 30,625 more cases

HONG KONG, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 pandemic still wreaked havoc in Asia-Pacific countries as India's total tally surpassed 32 million cases on Wednesday.

India's total cases reached 32,036,511, with 38,353 new cases registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.

Besides, 497 deaths were recorded since Tuesday morning, taking the death toll to 429,179.

There are still 386,351 active cases in the country with a fall of 2,157 active cases during the past 24 hours.

The number of confirmed cases in Indonesia rose by 30,625 within one day to 3,749,446, with the death toll adding by 1,579 to 112,198, the health ministry said.

According to the ministry, 39,931 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of patients recovering from COVID-19 to 3,211,078.

Thailand reported 21,038 new cases and 207 more fatalities, both the third-highest daily tally since the pandemic began, according to the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The country's total number of infections has risen to 816,989, and the death toll climbed to 6,795, according to the CCSA.

The government has been trying to secure more vaccines and accelerate the vaccine roll-out to create herd immunity with the aim to vaccinate some 70 percent of the nearly 70-million population by the end of the year.

Malaysia reported another 20,780 new infections, the health ministry said, bringing the national total to 1,320,547.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that 15 of the new cases are imported and 20,765 are local transmissions.

Another 211 more deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 11,373.

The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 12,021 new infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,688,040.

The death toll climbed to 29,374 after 154 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH added.

Wednesday's caseload is the highest since April 10, when DOH reported 12,674 daily infections.

Pakistan on Tuesday reported 4,856 new cases, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) said on Wednesday.

The NCOC, a department leading Pakistan's campaign against the pandemic, said that the country's number of overall confirmed cases had risen to 1,080,360, including 972,098 recoveries.

The number of active cases has dropped to 84,177 who are under treatment across the country, including 4,513 critical patients.

According to the NCOC, the pandemic killed 81 people on Tuesday, increasing the overall death toll to 24,085.

South Korea's daily cases hit a record high due to the continued virus spread in the Seoul metropolitan area, the health authorities said.

The country reported 2,223 more cases for the past 24 hours, raising the total number of infections to 216,206.

The recent resurgence was attributable to cluster infections in the greater Seoul region.

One more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 2,135. Enditem
