LISBON, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese parliament on Friday approved in the first reading the Government Budget proposal for 2020 by 108-86 votes with 36 abstentions.

The budget bill for the government led by Prime Minister Antonio Costa forecasts a surplus of 0.2 percent of gross domestic product, the first budget with surplus in the Southern European country since 1974.

The bill will now go to committees for further discussions and possible changes before a final vote scheduled for early February.
