BERLIN, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The German cabinet approved the new raw materials strategy, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Engery (BMWi) announced on Wednesday.

"For Germany as an industrial and export nation, a reliable supply of raw materials is central," said Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier.

The raw materials strategy comprised a total of 17 measures for a "secure, responsible and sustainable supply" of raw materials to companies in order to "strengthen the competitiveness of the German industry."

As part of the strategy, the government would seek to establish "high standards" in mining throughout Europe as well as internationally in the interest of sustainable development under economic, ecological and social aspects.

Another agreed measure was the establishment of a "round table" with the German industry to increase the use of secondary raw materials from recycling.

Developments such as electro-mobility, the energy transition and digitalization as well as the associated key and future technologies, were changing the demand for raw materials in Germany, BMWi noted.
