MADRID, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish government opened on Tuesday its auction for the concessions for its 5G networks in the 700 megahertz (MHz) frequency in a move it expects to bring in 1.5 billion euros (1.76 billion U.S. dollars) in revenues.

Telefonica, Orange and Vodafone are the only service providers that will take part in the bidding for concessions that will have a minimum duration of 20 years and will come with an optional 20-year extension.

By the end of 2025, the Spanish government expects over 400 localities in the country to have 5G network coverage -- 30 percent by the end of 2022 and 70 percent before July 2024.

Spain's ten most important airports, three main ports, six biggest railway stations and eight main motorways should also have 5G coverage by the end of 2022, with these numbers eventually rising to 22 airports, 12 ports, ten stations and 87 roads.

This is the third auction of 5G frequencies in the country after that of the 3.6-3.8 gigahertz (GHz) in 2018 and 20 MHz in 2020.

The 700 MHz frequency is the most attractive for the operators as it offers good in-building penetration, allowing mobile phone access similar to that of a landline phone. Enditem
