Indian Parliament adjourned amid protests from opposition lawmakers

NEW DELHI, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Both Houses of the Indian Parliament Wednesday witnessed adjournments amid continued protest from lawmakers of opposition parties on different issues.

Officials said no sooner the Lower House met for the day, members from the Congress party started raising slogans against the government on the alleged irregularities in Rafale aircraft deal.

"The protesting lawmakers were demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe in the matter. Similarly, AIADMK lawmakers were also in the well against the construction of a dam across Cauvery River and to protect the lives of Cauvery delta farmers, while TDP members raised slogans demanding financial benefits to Andhra Pradesh under the State Reorganization Act of 2014," an official said. "The lawmakers from Shiv Sena members were also in the well demanding the construction of the temple in Ayodhya."

After failing to convince the lawmakers to allow the House to function, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House till noon amid noisy scenes.

Meanwhile, the Upper House of the Parliament also witnessed protests from AIADMK and DMK members over the issues concerning farmers in Tamil Nadu, following which it was adjourned twice.

The Winter session of the Parliament began on Tuesday and the first day of the session passed uneventfully.
