CHINGOLA, Zambia, May 9 (Xinhua) -- A copper producer in Zambia has terminated contracts with three mining firms working on some of its operation sites, resulting in 370 people losing their jobs, a company official said on Wednesday.
Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has terminated contracts with companies that were working at its Nchanga mine in Chingola District, Copperbelt Province.
Eugene Chungu, the firm's general manager for corporate affairs, confirmed that contracts with the affected firms have expired and will not be renewed.
Chungu said the Nchanga mine would resume operations as soon as the Indian firm stocks enough acid to treat the materials from the underground.
KCM, a subsidiary of India's Vedanta Resources, is one of the largest integrated copper producers in Africa.
