MONTEVIDEO, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Spanish striker Xisco Jimenez arrived in Uruguayan capital Montevideo on Wednesday to complete a surprise move to Penarol.

The 33-year-old is expected to sign a contract that runs until the end of 2019 after ending a two-year spell with newly promoted La Liga outfit Osasuna in June.

"I'm proud to be here, to have this beautiful opportunity that opens up the world a little and allows me to experience something new," Jimenez told reporters upon arriving at Montevideo's Carrasco international airport.

"I hope I can help the club achieve its goals and I'll be trying my best to make that happen."

The Mallorcan, whose career has included spells at Deportivo La Coruna and Newcastle United, will be the first European to play for Penarol since Serb Ilija Petkovic in 1971.

He is hoping to be available for Penarol's home fixture against Defensor Sporting in the opening round of the first division Clausura championship on Saturday.
