Tunisian interim president meets European Parliament official on election issues

TUNIS, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian Interim President Mohamed Ennaceur on Thursday met with European Parliament Vice-President Fabio Massimo Castaldo, who heads the European Union Election Observation Mission (EOM), said a presidency statement.

At the meeting at the Palace of Carthage, Castaldo handed Ennaceur a written message from the President-elect of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, in which she reiterated the EU's readiness to support Tunisia and reaffirmed her confidence in Tunisia's ability to continue to take further steps towards democracy.

According to the statement, Castaldo presented an overview of the work of the EOM, composed of about 100 observers and electoral analysts in all governorates.

"The EOM's president reiterated European Union's support to consolidate the Tunisian democratic experience," said the presidency.

He hailed the determination of the Tunisian interim president to ensure the smooth conduct of the presidential and legislative elections in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.

There are 26 candidates running for the presidential election scheduled on Sept. 15 and voting abroad will take place from Sept. 13 to 15.
