WINDHOEK, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Road fatalities and injuries are still a major concern in Namibia, an official said Thursday.

Speaking at a National Assembly public hearing, National Road Safety Council Executive Secretary Eugene Tendekule said that despite several campaigns, the country is losing the fight against road accidents.

In 2017, road accidents cost more than 1.3 billion Namibian dollars (87 million U.S. dollars) in Namibia.

"Most accidents on our roads are head-on collisions which can be avoided if there were more dual carriage highways," he said.

Statistics from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) of Namibia show that in 2018 Namibia ranked first in Africa in road accidents with more than 19,000 accidents occurring every year, leaving 700 dead and 7,000 others disabled.
