BERLIN, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Many technical jobs in Germany were still dominated by men, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) revealed on Monday.

In 2018, around 89 percent of employees in Germany's important mechanical and automotive engineering sector were still male. The share of men working in this sector was still 4 percentage points higher than in IT and communication technology, according to Destatis.

The share of women in "these male domains hardly changes", Destatis noted. While the proportion of female computer scientists rose by just 2 percentage points to 15 percent compared to 2012, the share for female machine and vehicle technicians "even fell slightly" by 1 percentage point to 11 percent.

However, a little more change became apparent in jobs in police, criminal services as well as Germany's judicial system. The share of women working in these professions rose from 20 to 24 percent over the same period, according to Destatis.

A totally different picture was shown in the wide range of educational occupations in Germany which were clearly dominated by females. In 2018, only a quarter of the total 830,000 teachers at general schools were male, a decrease by around 2 percentage points compared with 2012.

At German primary schools, only 1 in 10 teachers were men, according to Destatis. In higher education facilities on the other hand, such as universities, teaching and researching positions were staffed with 58 percent men.

In occupations such as nursing care for the elderly, which were more likely to be "regarded as women's occupations", the proportion of men rose by 2 percentage points to 16 percent, Destatis found. In 2018, there had been 110,000 male nurses in Germany and 583,000 female nurses.

The proportion of men working in childcare in Germany remained "relatively low", but more men had been "attracted to this occupation" in recent years. According to Destatis, 6.4 percent of employees in child day care in Germany were male as of March 2019.
