STOCKHOLM, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Emergency services in Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city, have asked the public to stay away from the city's harbor following a suspected gas leak on Tuesday.

Police were called to the harbor after the leak of an as-yet unverified substance. The public has been asked not to enter the cordoned-off area, local newspaper Goteborgsposten reported on Tuesday.

Later on, emergency services told local media that the leak posed no risks to members of the public.

"We don't know what type of substance has formed but there has been some kind of excessive pumping of salt water into a pool where some form of reaction has occurred," said Stefan Stromberg, a press spokesperson at the Gothenburg harbor.

According to reports, a yellow-orange gas or smoke could be seen at the premises of Stena recycling, which handles industrial waste. However, according to the company's head of communications Asa Ahlgren Berndtson, there was no gas leak. She said smoke formed at the premises, causing the alarm to go off.

"No one was hurt and according to our head of productions, the situation is under control," Ahlgren Berndtson told Goteborgsposten's reporter.

Later, emergency services also confirmed that the situation was under control and that there was no threat to the public. However, the police asked residents not to go past the cordons and the emergency services stayed on site to investigate the incident and identify the leaked substance.
