MOSCOW, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Russia's advanced Protivnik-GE mobile 3D surveillance radar has entered into service in the country's southeastern region of Volga, local media reported Wednesday.

A fifth-generation multipurpose mobile radar, Protivnik-GE, has started operating at an air base in Samara, a leading industrial center in the Volga region, Tass news agency quoted Russia's Central Military District as saying.

The Protivnik-GE radar features a digital phased array antenna and a digital signal processing system capable of target identification while providing the critical information to air defense systems.

It is designed to automatically or semi-automatically detect, position, and track strategic and tactical aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic targets and small low-speed aircraft.
