MINSK, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Belarusian First Deputy Prime Minister Vasily Matyushevsky on Friday said Belarus intends to expand its cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

While speaking to Jacques Miniane, chief of the IMF mission to Belarus, Matyushevsky expressed the hope for expanding cooperation with the IMF, the press service of the Belarusian government said.

Matyushevsky thanked the IMF for its assistance in the creation of a market of troubled assets.

The two sides also discussed macroeconomic stability of the economy, support for the private sector, the restructuring of state-run enterprises, and priority avenues of Belarus-IMF cooperation in the medium term.

Earlier, Chairman of the Council of Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich met with Jacques Miniane and said that the Belarusian authorities consider the maintenance of economic growth, development of small and medium businesses, reduction of the vulnerability of the economy, and improvement of the social protection mechanism as the strategic goals for Belarus.

"It is through this prism that we would like to develop cooperation with the fund," the chairman said.

The IMF regular mission works in Belarus from July 9 to 13. Its purpose is to review the country's current economic situation.
