LUSAKA, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's main political parties pledged on Friday to end violence in campaigns for the upcoming mayoral elections in Lusaka.

The ruling party Patriotic Front (PF) and the main opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) agreed to "call a truce and disarm their militant members," according to the communique issued after a meeting organized by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

"(We) will allow the electorate to vote freely on July 26, 2018 without any threats of violence, force or intimidation," the communique added.

Both parties have become "the biggest stumbling block" to peaceful elections in the capital of Zambia as clashes often broke out between their supporters, according to local media.
