KAMPALA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and six others critically injured in a road accident on Monday in central Uganda, a police spokesperson said Tuesday.

The fatal accident occurred when a taxi and a saloon car collided head-on in Mpigi district along a highway that connects the capital city of Kampala to the southwestern town of Masaka, Joseph Musana, the Katonga regional police spokesperson, told Xinhua.

"We highly suspect the accident was caused by over-speeding or recklessness," said Musana. "We are appealing to all the road users to take precautions and observe road safety measures."

Local media reported Tuesday that the number of the injured was eight.

The injured were taken to a hospital in Kampala for treatment, according to the police.

Earlier Monday, another road accident in southwestern Uganda claimed 11 lives and injured 22.

Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents each year, with over 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest road traffic death rates, the police said.
