TRIPOLI, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Islamic State (IS) affiliates on Thursday killed seven security personnel and injured two others in an attack on a security checkpoint in western Libyan, according to a security source.

"An attack was carried out by a number of IS members on a security checkpoint at the western entrance to Zliten," said a security source in Zliten Security Directorate, some 160 km east of the capital Tripoli.

The attack was carried out at 8:00 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) by terrorists on a four-wheel drive vehicle.

The attack comes less than a day after a voice appeal of IS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was issued, in which he called on his supporters to "turn to Libya and support the Mujahideen in Libya, Syria and Iraq."

A number of Libyan cities have previously suffered similar terrorist attacks, targeting security and military checkpoints.
