SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Leading U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology Inc. said Wednesday it will invest 3 billion U.S. dollars to boost memory production at its plant in Manassas, Virginia, about 64 km west of Washington, D.C., by 2030.

The Manassas site manufactures products that are primarily sold in the automotive, networking and industrial markets for diverse applications such as industrial automation, drones and the internet of things.

As part of the expansion, Micron will also establish a global research development center in Manassas for the development of memory and storage solutions for automotive, industrial and networking markets.

In the fall of 2019, the company will complete an initial project for making memory chips at the Manassas factory. Production will be ramped up in the first half of 2020, Micron said.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said Micron's expansion in Manassas represents "one of the largest manufacturing investments in the history of Virginia," which "will have a tremendous impact on our economy by creating 1,100 high-demand jobs."

Micron, based in Boise, Idaho, is the world's fourth largest semiconductor firm with chipmaking plants in Singapore, Japan and China's Taiwan and some assembly and testing factories on the Chinese mainland.
