Rwanda ruling party wins majority parliament seats: provisional results

KIGALI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Rwanda ruling party, Rwanda patriotic Front (RPF) has maintained its dominance in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house, National Electoral Commission (NEC) provisional results from the Monday parliamentary elections have shown.

The results released by NEC on late Tuesday evening indicates that the RPF -led coalition, which also includes six smaller parties, had garnered 40 seats out of 53 seats in the parliamentary polls.

The elections of the lower house use one single nationwide constituency, where 53 seats are directly elected by proportional representation. The other 27 seats reserved for special interest groups including women, the young and the disabled are elected indirectly.

More than 7 million registered voters participated in the legislative elections that ran from Sept. 2 to 4, according to NEC.

"The elections were peaceful, free and fair. The turn up was good. Tomorrow evening we shall release final results including those of youth, women and the disabled," Mbanda said.

According to NEC, in the next parliament, women will occupy 67.5 percent of the total seats.
