KIEV, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia on Wednesday signed a declaration to boost cooperation within the Carpathian region, the Ukrainian government's press service said in a statement.

The document was signed in Polish southeastern city of Krynica-Zdroj by senior government representatives of the four countries.

Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Stepan Kubiv, who signed the declaration from the Ukrainian side, said that the document is aimed at establishing a new macro-regional strategy for the development of the Carpathian region.

The strategy would create new opportunities for boosting regional cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, ecology, tourism, innovation and investment projects, Kubiv said.

The Carpathians is a mountain system in Central and Eastern Europe that stretches through eight countries -- Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Czech Republic, Serbia and Austria.
