840 kg of cocaine seized, four arrested in Portugal

LISBON, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese Judiciary Police (PJ) has seized about 840 kg of cocaine from a recreational boat in the Azores archipelago and arrested four people, police said in a statement on Wednesday.

In addition to the drugs and the vessel, several navigation and satellite communication devices, mobile phones, a computer, cash and various documents were also seized.

The vessel, flying a foreign flag, was initially located sailing off the Azores archipelago, then entered the marina of the city of Horta on the island of Faial where it was searched.

The PJ, with the support of the Maritime Police in the city of Horta, detected five compartments specially created in the structure of the vessel for the transportation of narcotics. A total of 700 cocaine tablets and 35,000 euros (40,676 U.S. dollars) were found.

The two men and two women on board, all foreigners and aged between 21 and 36 years, were detained. They belong to a criminal organization established in different European countries and Latin America, according to the statement.
