MADRID, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- An RQ-4 Global Hawk, the largest unmanned surveillance aircraft of the U.S. Air Force, crashed off the southwestern coast of Spain on June 26, Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported Friday.
The report did not mention why the drone crashed or its mission. However, it said that Global Hawks were very active in Europe and had carried out missions over Ukraine and the Black Sea.
The crash near the town of Rota in Cadiz Province was confirmed by U.S. European Command spokesperson Joe Hontz on Friday.
The RQ-4 Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance, remotely piloted aircraft used by the U.S. military for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
