NEW DELHI, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A dreaded left-wing Naxalite rebel, who carried a reward of 800,000 rupees (11,400 U.S. dollars) on his head, has surrendered in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, police said Friday.
The surrender took place in the state's Sukma district.
"The rebel, identified as Vetti Rama, gave up arms before the Chhattisgarh Police and the para-military Central Reserve Police Force. His surrender is a major achievement for us," a senior police official said.
"We intend to get vital information about rebels from him and will rehabilitate him as per the state government policy for surrendered Naxalites," he added.
Naxalites are currently active in seven Indian states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.
The Naxalite insurgency began in the eastern state of West Bengal in late 1960s.
Though major offensives by Indian security forces in recent years have pushed the rebels back to their forest strongholds and the levels of violence have fallen, hit-and-run attacks are still common.
In recent years, however, several rebels have given up arms and got rehabilitated in the mainstream of the society.
