Car driver plows into crowds in southeastern France, 2 wounded: report

PARIS, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A man drove his car into crowds in the southeastern French city of Nimes in the wee hours of Friday, wounding two people, a regional radio reported.

According to France Bleu, the car plowed into revellers who were celebrating feria, an annual local festival, in Nimes at around 1:30 a.m. local time (2330 GMT on Thursday) before being stopped by the anti-attack barriers.

The 36-year-old driver, known to police services for previous petty crimes, suffered "mental confusion" when he was arrested. He was then transported to the Nimes University Hospital for treatment.

There was no indication that the incident was terror related, the report said, adding that regional judicial police department has opened an inquiry into "attempted murder."
