U.S. stocks open slightly higher amid data

NEW YORK, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks gained modestly on Friday morning as investors were digesting a slew of economic data.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 27.82 points, or 0.11 percent, to 26,173.81. The S&P 500 was up 1.41 points, or 0.05 percent, to 2,905.59. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 7.96 points, or 0.10 percent, to 8,021.67.

Shares of Goldman Sachs and Boeing were among the advancers. Shares of both companies climbed about 0.8 percent in early trading.

Apple shares retreated on Friday morning after a rallying previous trading session. Apple stock surged more than 2.4 percent at Thursday's market closing, among the major contributors to the market.

Wall Street paid close attention to the latest data.

U.S. retail sales increased 0.1 percent in August from the previous month, the Department of Commerce said on Friday. It is the smallest gain in six months, missing market forecasts of 0.4-percent rise.

The August retail sales rose 6.6 percent from August 2017, according to the report.
