BERLIN, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Defending champions Bayern Munich regained the lead in the standings after earning a 3-1 comeback win against Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 at the 3rd round in Bundesliga on Saturday.

Leverkusen opened the scoring but Bayern bounced back with two first half goals before James Rodriguez' late goal ensured the third victory in as many games.

Heiko Herrlich's men grabbed a perfect start into the game as Bayern's Thiago Alcantara conceded a handball penalty with four minutes played.

Kevin Volland stepped up and saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Nevertheless, Leverkusen had to retake the penalty due encroachment. Wendell made no mistake and broke the deadlock from the spot in the 6th minute.

The hosts responded and needed only four minutes to restore parity as Frenchman Corentin Tolisso hammered home from inside the box.

Bayern gained momentum and completed their comeback in the 19th minute when Arjen Robben capitalized on Jonathan Tah's misplaced clearance to volley home into the far post corner.

The "Bavarians" controlled the proceedings on the pitch after the break meanwhile things went from bad to worse for Leverkusen as substitute Karim Bellarabi received his marching orders for a rude foul play to Rafinha in the 80th minute.

Niko Kovac's men continued on the front foot and rounded off their relentless performance with a third goal as James Rodriguez headed home Thiago Alcantara's cross to the far post in the dying minutes of the game.

With the result, Bayern Munich secured their third consecutive win to defend the top sport whereas Bayer Leverkusen dropped to the bottom after losing their third game in a row.

Elsewhere, Timo Werner's brace helped Leipzig to snatch their first win of the season after edging Hannover 3-2.

Newly promoted Dusseldorf sewed up their first win since 2013 as they overcame Hoffenheim 2-1 on Dodi Lukebakio's late winner.

Admir Mehmedi's last-grasp equalizer secured Wolfsburg a two-all draw against Hertha Berlin and Mainz stunned Augsburg with two late goals to seal a 2-1 victory on home soil.
