ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Communal clashes in Ethiopia's western Benishangul Gumuz regional state has left 10 people dead, an Ethiopian official said on Sunday.

The state's chief police commissioner, Seifeden Harun, said the clashes occurred on Thursday between daily laborers in localities near the border with Sudan.

So far, 52 people have been arrested in connection with the clashes, with federal and regional security forces being deployed to the area to prevent a recurrence of the violence, Harun said.

The region witnessed a similar bout of unrest in May involving locals and other ethnic groups residing in the region, reportedly over access to land and state resources.

The Benishangul Gumuz regional state, located in western Ethiopia along the border with Sudan, hosts Ethiopia's largest development project, the 6,450-megawatt Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which is under construction on the Blue Nile River.
