11 jailbreakers rearrested in Myanmar's southeastern state

YANGON, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Eleven prisoners, who broke a jail and escaped in Hpa-an township, Myanmar's Kayin state, have been recaptured by local security force, bringing the total of the rearrested to 21, said a release of the Home Affairs Ministry Tuesday.

Of them, the leader of the jailbreakers was shot dead by the police on Sunday, while another inmate died on the way to the hospital on Monday.

A total of 41 inmates broke the jail and escaped after smashing through four gates with a garbage truck they hijacked on Sunday morning.

When the truck was about to leave the prison after collecting garbage, a prisoner pulled down the driver and hit him and then drove the car out of the prison together with other inmates.

The 41 inmates including 29 convicts and 12 prisoners who are under trial and the leader is serving life sentence without parole for drug trafficking, illegal possession of arms and attempted murder of two persons.

Local security force is continuing search for other escaped prisoners.
