PRAGUE, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Safeguard exercise has been held at the Dukovany nuclear power plant in Czech Republic since Tuesday with the aim to inspect the external protection of the power plant, said Jan Nachaj, head of the regional military command in Jihlava, on Thursday.

The exercise culminated on Thursday when Czech soldiers and policemen were dealing with two simulated terrorist attacks against the nuclear power plant.

A total of 235 people were involved in the exercise, including the military's active reserves. The regional firefighters participated in the exercise for the first time.

In a simulated attack, a bomb disposal expert had to make harmless a planted explosive with a robot. The police also joined with their equipment, including a special monitoring vehicle.

Regional police chief Milos Trojanek said that one can not underestimate the threats of possible terror attacks at present. The safety of the nuclear power plant and its surroundings has long been among their priorities. He said a special police unit is in charge of the safety of the power plant and is ready to intervene elsewhere in the region.

The Safeguard exercise has been held annually since 2014 and alternately at the nuclear power plants in Dukovany and Temelin, south Bohemia.
