Preliminary results show opposition candidate taking lead in Maldives presidential polls: elections commission

MALE, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives Elections Commission said early on Monday that counting of votes from the Maldives presidential polls was still continuing in a few centers but according to the majority results, Joint Opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had secured a victory.

Spokesperson of the elections commission Ahmed Akram told Xinhua that the final preliminary results are expected to be announced around 9 a.m. local time on Monday while the final official results will be released before the coming Sunday.

"From the provisional results received so far, Candidate Solih has secured a lead," Akram said.

He added that the election which was held on Sunday was one of the most peaceful and fair elections in the Maldives in recent years.

The elections commission late on Sunday night thanked both candidates, Ibrahim Solih and President Abdulla Yameen for maintaining a conducive environment for holding a free and fair election.

According to preliminary results released by local media, Solih had won the polls by securing 58.4 percent of the votes, while President Abdulla Yameen had secured 41.6 percent of the votes.
