Magnitude 5.9 earthquake rocks central Indonesia

JAKARTA, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- A shallow under-land quake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck off Central Sulawesi province of central Indonesia on Friday, the meteorology and geophysics agency said here.

The quake jolted at 2:00 p.m. local time (0700 GMT) with epicenter at 8 km northwest Donggala of the province and a depth of 10 kilometers, an official in charge at the agency Fauzi said.

"The highest jolt was recorded at IV MMI (modified mercalli intensity) in Donggala," he told Xinhua over phone.

Still, the official has not got any preliminary report of damages or casualty.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake-affected area popularly known as "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
