SYDNEY, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Air Niugini has confirmed that all passengers on board Flight 73 from Pohnpei in Micronesia to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea had evacuated the aircraft after it overshot the runway and landed in water.

While initial reports said that one passenger may not have been able to escape, on Saturday specialist divers from the United States completed an inspection of the Boeing 737-800 and found that all passengers were able to make their way off the aircraft.

Authorities are still searching for the one passenger who remains unaccounted for, believing the individual to have been rescued by a local fishing boat.

Six passengers were taken to a hospital after the incident, and so far two were discharged, while the other four remain in stable condition and were transported to Guam for further treatment.

The majority of the 35 passengers and 12 crew have since been taken to Port Moresby on a specially arranged flight.

The airline said investigations are underway as to why the plane overshot the runway and landed in waters off Chuuk State on Friday.
