NEW DELHI, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and three others injured after a speeding truck rammed into a bus from behind in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Monday.

The collision occurred in Bhadohi village in Chhavani area in the state's Basti district, some 200 km from Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow.

"The truck hit the bus while it was being pushed by some passengers on the road as it broke down near an eatery in the village. The impact of the crash caused six men died on the spot after getting sandwiched between the truck and the bus," a police official said.

Those injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, where the condition of one person is said to be critical, he said.

Eye-witnesses told police that the truck was travelling at high speed and its driver failed to apply brakes when he spotted the state-run bus being pushed by the victims after its engine failed to start, leading to the fatal accident.

The bus was headed to Gorakhpur district from Allahabad city when the accident occurred.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said. "A manhunt has also been launched to nab the truck driver who fled the spot leaving the vehicle behind. We have booked him for rash and negligent driving," he added.
