GENEVA, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Train tickets, clothes, and hotel stays are growing in popularity as online purchases in Switzerland as three out of four people ordered something on the internet at least once in 2017, a government report showed Monday.

The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) said in its report "E-commerce in Switzerland from 2010-2017" that seven years ago only one in two Swiss consumers shopped online.

The latest number of online shoppers is 4.9 million people and this represents a 50-percent increase since 2010, said the report.

In total, nine out of 10 shoppers made less than one online purchase per week in 2017, "which clearly leaves room for significant growth potential", the FSO said.

The main online shoppers are men aged between 25 and 34 with a college education.

However, consumers without a higher education, women and those not aged 24-55 are catching up, the statistical office said, based on the results of a survey of 3,000 people on internet usage.

An analysis of the frequency of purchases shows that 40 percent of people shopped online once or twice within three months and 25 percent did so at least six times.

In total, nine out of 10 consumers placed fewer than one order online a week.

While train and airline tickets are the most common virtual purchases, bought by two-thirds of consumers, the online purchase of clothes and shoes, holidays and events such as concerts is also popular.

Items rarely bought online include loans, medicine, investment services, lottery tickets, insurance policies or films.

Online customers doubled between 2014 and 2017 for digital books, magazines, and newspapers.
