TUNIS, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A five-member cell involved in financing Tunisian militants operating in Syria was dismantled in the provinces of Kef and Zaghoua, the Tunisian Interior Ministry said Monday.
The five individuals were detained with a large sum of money in foreign currency and Tunisian dinars seized with them, said the ministry.
Kef Province is located in northwestern Tunisia and Zaghouan Province to the southeast of the capital Tunis.
In 2017, the German research center Firil said in its annual reports that 12,800 Tunisians, of whom 5,100 were killed, had been fighting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since 2011, the sixth most among foreign terrorists in the war-torn country.
