Memorial services, burial ceremony held for Vietnamese former party chief Do Muoi

HANOI, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Memorial services for Do Muoi, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, were held in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday morning, followed by the burial ceremony in the capital city in the afternoon.

The memorial service at the National Funeral Hall in Hanoi was attended by leaders and former leaders of Vietnam's party, state and government, including General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong.

During the two-day national mourning on Saturday and Sunday, over 1,600 Vietnamese and foreign delegations from Laos, Cambodia and Cuba, along with more than 60,000 people, paid homage to Do Muoi.

Do Muoi, born in 1917, passed away in Hanoi after a long time of serious illness. He was the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee from June 1991 to December 1997.
