YAOUNDE, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon's Constitutional Council on Tuesday began hearing petitions for nullification of the Oct. 7 presidential election, as the country eagerly awaits proclamation of the final results of the poll.

Eleven judges of the Constitutional Council are hearing the petitions. It is unclear how long will the Council take to rule on the petitions, but final results of the election are expected to be declared by Oct. 22, according to the Electoral Code.

Police has tightened security around the Conference Center in the capital, Yaounde, where the hearings are unfolding, witnessed a Xinhua reporter.

Latest official figure shows that a total of 18 petitions have been filed by voters and candidates asking for the election to be either partially or totally annulled, according to the Constitutional Council.

Opposition candidates, including Joshua Osih from the leading opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF), Maurice Kamto from the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM), and Cabral Libii from the UNIVERS, said their teams observed "irregularities" and "disregard of electoral law" during the polling.
