BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Stroke is now the fourth highest cause of death in Brunei Darussalam, with 143 deaths in 2017 and most of them occurring among those aged 65 and above, Haji Mohd Isham, the country's Minister of Health said.

In his message marking the World Stroke Day 2018 which fell on Monday, the minister said more than 300 cases of stroke occur within a year in the country. In addition, about 78 percent of these stroke sufferers are male.

Globally, stroke causes one in every 10 deaths and is the second highest cause of death among people over 60 years old.

"We will reinforce our commitment to continue creating awareness of the stroke disease to reduce the burden of the disease," the minister said.

"There is no doubt that the most effective way to deal with stroke is to practise a healthy lifestyle while getting timely treatment, given that early detection and treatment can save lives."
