YANGON, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has held a seminar in Yangon to work for the emergence of a universal design in Yangon city, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Tuesday.

The awareness seminar on Yangon and Universal Design Cities was jointly held by the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) and Myanmar Independent Living Initiative (MILI) Monday, involving the participation of the Australian embassy.

This is part of the efforts to ensure Yangon will be a desirable city to live in, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein told the seminar, adding that significant changes will be made upon receiving suggestions from officials from YCDC, various departments and civil society organizations.

He hoped that the plan will reap great results for Yangon to become a better city to live in and be accessible to all people, regardless of age, disability or other factors.

He stressed the need to select pilot project areas to carry out within the entire city, proposing six townships including the downtown area.

MILI was formed to promote equal rights, inclusion and independent living for people with disability and economic disadvantage in Myanmar.
