NEW DELHI, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and 13 others injured on Friday in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and another vehicle in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.
The accident took place in Gunnaur of Sambhal district, about 414 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.
"In a tragic road accident here today six people were killed and 13 others injured after a bus collided head-on with Bolerio vehicle," a senior police official posted in Gunnaur said. "The injured were immediately removed to a nearest medical facility and bodies taken for post-mortem."
Following the accident locals and police teams rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work.
Senior police officials told media the accident occurred due to poor visibility in the area.
"The incident occurred due to low visibility caused by fog," Superintendent of Police of Sambhal, Yamuna Prasad, was quoted by media as having said.
According to officials the critically injured were later referred to Moradabad for specialized treatment.
Police have registered a case and ordered investigations into the accident.
Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
Officials say an average of over 400 deaths take place every day in India due to road accidents.
